Strategy

What would you like to see?

I'd like to see links to discussions of strategy. I blunder around and gradually master some games, but wonder all the time about how other players think and prioritize. I'm not talking about super moves, which I don't really comprehend, being of too rudimentary skills at this point.

  • Thats an open-ended question. If you tell us which game you're talking about...a specialist will chime in.

  • I play freecell, maze, golf and pyramid. Before coming to greenfelt i had only plared klondike and freecell. In all these games, i feel that the rules explanations don't get to the issue about gaining understanding of the strategies of playng the game with enjoyment and success. Maybe the learning curve of being lost in a pathless wilderness is what some people like. Me, i keep wondering if there are discussions about better or worse ways to start.

  • I can only speak to Golf and Pyramid since that's the only games I play out of the games you mentioned. Strategywise...they are pretty similar. I liken it to walking down a path. Part of the game there is one clear way to go, but suddenly choices present themselves, and you must decide if you want to zig or zag based on what cards are left showing and (if you can count cards) what cards are left in the deck. Both games can frustrate you because you think you have the best possible score...and then the leaderboard will pop up with one player getting an extra move. AUGH!
    Good Luck!

  • Hello Viridium.I mostly play Klondike and have done for many years.None of the games are easy, and as homedoggy implied, you may be faced with a number of choices in the game. The successful completion of a game can rest on just one card.Learn to read the game, don't be afraid to bring cards down from the formations to facilitate a move.Try not to use the automatic feature if you can until you are more confident. It will often lead you astray.Forget speed, play at your own pace.Forget the talk of strategies and other marvels, just practice, but you must play regularly to increase your skill.Don't be put off by other players performances, especially their speed in completing a game. Many of these players play every day. There is no secret formular about winning these games just frequent practice and I can't emphasize this enough.Carry on playing,it will come.I hope this is of some help to you.I wish you all success in your future playing.

  • Thanks graeme. I’ll keep trundling along ;-)

  • Of the 4 you mentioned, I really only play pyramid well. A common strategy is to leave a card in the pyramid, even if it's pair comes up, so that it can be paired with something higher in the pyramid later on. Also, the computer pairs the pile with the match lowest down and/or farthest to the left if 2 matches are available. Don't let the computer dictate your moves. Out of perverseness, I always play the non-default card first.
