Sorry, them's the rules..... it's a tough game. "Forty Thieves is a solitaire card game. It is quite difficult to win, and relies mostly on skill. It is also known as Napoleon at Saint Helena, Roosevelt at San Juan, Big Forty and Le Cadran. Rules:
Two decks are used (104 cards).
Deal ten tableau piles of four cards each, all face up and all visible.
Leave space for eight foundation piles above the tableau piles.
You may only move the top card from any tableau. You may place any card in an empty tableau space.
The tableaus are built down by suit.
The foundations are built up by suit, from ace to king.
You may deal one card at a time from the stock to the waste.
You may use the top card from the waste.
You may only go through the stock once.
The object of the game is to move all the cards to the foundations."
Hmmm....once again, I must take exception to the notion that Forty Thieves "relies mostly on skill". Player skill is a factor, but only if the shuffle results in a sequence of cards that will allow you to win at all. I've played bunches and bunches of 40T, on Green Felt and elsewhere, and my lowest win rate is on Green Felt. My highest win rate - and it is quite consistent over many, many games - is about 7%. This is in line with the estimated win rate of one in fifteen (6.6%) that I've seen quoted. I've attained this rate on several versions, including one on my iMac.
I'm currently working on a program (in CUDA-C for the nerds out there) to predict whether or not a given shuffle of 104 cards can be played to a win. I can't wait to try it out on some of the 40T games here on GF that have not yet been won by anyone.
I just joined today and before I joined, I won a lot of times per session. Since joining, I have not won a single game. That is no fun. Does the site owner cause Klondike Solitaire (what I use) to do that on purpose? I presume so.
olden there is also other versions of Klondike as recently started playing this interesting games as person only plays for fun, not interested in any scores or times , you have Klondike3 and on game and sending you info on FAQ in upper left on you Klondike Game screen , just scroll down on blog for greenfelt under solitaire games, go to #12 you will see a list of Secret Games you will see Klondike(Foundations) https://greenfelt.net/faq
Enjoy have fun.
I have played the secret game Alternation many, many times and have yet to win. I really enjoy the game and, for me, find it more calming. I usually, tho not always, play Klondike and have been very successful at it. Winning or losing I love this site and the many games ... even the 'Secret' ones. ;~)
Hello rev, this is your old friend Gerald under an alias , keep that under your hat ,lol. I like the secret games in my response have played alternation and the other versions of Golf, (Hide the Kings) , I play the 3 versions of Golf and just picked up on the different Klondike games, now using this username for now. Hiding out and keeping low profile, Take Care Rev.
Riverrat55 ... Every morning before I am up and about I sit with a cup of coffee, open my iPad and head for the discussions (I need some laughs, some heartfelt comments and lots of kind banter to give me courage and good energy before I open the daily newspaper.). I especially enjoy the comments between you and Homedoggy and a few others. I have missed you both lately, so thank you for letting me know about new tag. ( I promise I won't tell anybody). A belated Happy Easter my friend. Hope all is well with you and all those who have found a home in your heart. S
@olden, We definitely do not treat anonymous users better than logged in users. The games you get are randomized and it's all really just luck of the draw.
(What would we gain by making logged-in users get impossible to win games?)
@olden What you are experiencing is something every frequent player of online solitaire has been through at one time or another. The computer is reeeeaaaaalllllly good at producing random shuffles of a virtual deck, so it is not at all uncommon to hit a 'run' of unwinnable shuffles in a given game, and, by the same token, to hit a 'run' of winning shuffles. In a game like Forty Thieves, where the probability of winning is low, it's quite possible to play 50 games without a single win, then to win 5 out of the next 10 games.
You don't have to win these games, all you have to do is be in the top 10. Or top 10%. Many are unwinnable. They're just so much fun! And I can't believe how many people can win the game and I can't! Oh well.
My sentiments exactly as evermore and cdmusic elaborated on , I only play for fun, to enjoy a few hours of time a day with great games of enjoyment each day.
I don't care "so much" about winning but once in a great while is not so much to ask I think.
I did not get back to this page till now so will try to find the "secret" games but I am not so good at finding such things that are obvious to most.
And I have at least scored well enough to be on the list once in a while now. I don't play for speed so that definitely will always affect my score. It is mindless and relaxing to me. I recently switched to a 2018 Mac laptop which will not accept the long time Burnt Monkey Solitaire (?) that I played for years and am still grieving its loss. I still can play it on my 2015 laptop but trying to switch everything over. Thanks to all who commented. I had not expected any or many responses!

Should be able to move not just last card but numerous cards of same suit. to different column.

Big Forty lets you move a whole column.
And again 40 plus 8 is a game you can actually win a lot because you can see the cards fan out and you get one redeal and a million restarts.

Who cares about winning? I play for fun and if I win, that is great but it is not life-altering if I don't.

i accept the challenge of finding a solution and don’t stop until i do! try, try, and try again, that’s what makes it fun for me, never give up!!!
