my cards are often appearing under the card they should be on top of when they are moved from column to column, making it difficult to know what is at the end of a column

Sorry. This is a bug in Internet Explorer and I haven't figured out how to work around it yet. If you use Chrome, Firefox or Safari it should not happen.
