Occasionally, I get shadows with the figures and numerals on the cards.

You have clicked the Pause button, in the row of buttons (New Game, Replay, Give Up, High Scores, Show Rules, Pause, Undo, Redo) at the top of the cards. Clicking it, again, should return the cards to normal.
