Mike, It just takes practice. Try making sure you know which Aces are buried and which 2's. Can't build up any speed without them. Also, try building up one suit of each rather than both at the same time. Try to get your score up to 60 or 70% better than "the rest" Eventually you'll get the hang of it.
Also, forty thieves is hard to win. Many times, even on the leaderboard, there are no "winning" scores. Try to get as many cards up as you can and then replay to improve your score.
