Yesterday, trying to get on Freecell, couldn't; then message from "Microsoft" came on saying they'd fix it. Then the man said we owed them $400. for "fixing it for us". Man was very angry with us when we wouldn't pay up. This happened to me years ago. We forgot that Microsoft never contacts us online to fix anything. These people are using Freecell to cheat people out of $400. for "fixing it" as they call it. Has this happened to any other clients of Freecell? I'd appreciate your advice on this. Thank you.
You did the right thing by refusing to pay scammers like that.
We don't serve any ads/scams like that. Many users end up seeing ads when they view our site because there is bad software installed on the computer that hijacks web pages like ours. It is possible that is what happened to you. It looks like you are using Safari. Open in the "Safari" menu then "Preferences". Check the "Extensions" section to make sure nothing unwanted is installed.
The other thing to try is visiting the secure Freecell site. If that doesn't serve the malware but the normal site does, then it's something else entirely.
In addition to what David said, you need to clean your computer of malware right away. There are good free programs that do this, including Malwarebytes and one from Microsoft itself, Microsoft Security Essentials, available here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download
