Asteroids - timing

If you look at the leader board for Asteroids, you will see that there's a player with similar scores to mine, but the amount of time spent playing for him or her is around twice that of mine for similar scores, consistently.

This leads me to wonder, is it possible that the game moves faster or slower on different computers with different internet connections?

If so, then the game would be much easier for some people if their game moves slower.
